Who is eligible for this program?
ALL Lauderdale County Students are eligible for this program; however, limited seats are available and enrollment applications must be submitted by April 9th, 2021, in order to ensure a seat for your child.
Why is the program being offered?
In January, 2021, the Tennessee General Assembly enacted the Tennessee Learning Loss Remediation and Student Acceleration Act to support students whose learning was interrupted by COVID-19. As a part of the initiative, Tennessee school districts are required to offer learning loss remediation programs for eligible students during the summer of 2021.
Is this program mandatory?
The Summer Learning Camp is optional, and not all students are required to attend. However, for select students, this program may be vital to their educational progress. If this is the case, these students will be contacted on an individual basis. If students are significantly behind or in danger of retention, the school may require participation in summer learning camps to achieve passing grades and/or to be promoted to the next grade.
In an effort to avoid course failure or students repeating the same grade, schools may discuss with some parents mandatory camp attendance. These discussions will be based on academic need and/or if their child lags behind due to missing assignments or incomplete work.
My student will be unavailable during a portion of the 4-week camp period. Are they still able to enroll?
Students will receive the greatest academic benefits by attending the full 4-week camp. However, students who will be unavailable for a limited number of days may still enroll in the program. For benchmarking purposes, students must attend the summer learning camps a minimum of 15 out 19 days to be assessed for progress.
What health precautions will be available during the Summer Learning Camp?
The Summer Learning Camps will follow the CDC and the Tennessee Department of Health Guidelines on safe gatherings. Each school site will have access to a school nurse.
Will transportation be provided for the Summer Learning Camp?
Yes, transportation will be available for students who sign-up for the Summer Learning Camps. Please be aware that social distancing may not be guaranteed; if you have health concerns about your child riding a bus, you may want to make other transportation arrangement. More information will be released closer to June regarding the logistics of bus transportation for students.
