7th grade Summer Learning Camp students at Ripley Middle School participated in a presentation on Yellow Fever in their ELA class. Mr. Phillip Knecht from the Holy Martyrs Museum in Holly Springs, MS conducted a presentation on Yellow Fever. Mr. Knecht discussed the 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic that students are learning about through Module 4 Wit and Wisdom in ELA. During the Summer Learning Camp, students are reading An American Plague and Fever! 1793 about the 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia. Students are learning and practicing research through the module. Also, Mr. Knecht discussed the local destructive epidemic that struck the Midsouth in 1878 including Memphis, Tennessee and Holly Springs, MS. Students saw artifacts and paintings, as well as, participated in an activity that showed the percentage that fled town, recovered, died, and had immunity.
